Hair How To: Side Braided Bun Tutorial

I don’t know about you, but it has been hot as heck here all summer. I’m talking it was almost 110 with the humidity this week. Like you can barely go outside without melting and not being able to breathe. Fun, right? I will take it over winter and minus 40 degree weather ANY day. Since I have really fun hair that turns into a giant cotton candy pouf ball in the humidity, I have had to be creative with how I style it, in order not to fall into the basic ponytail routine. I like to have fun with my hair, but I don’t like to spend a lot of time on it for a daily style. Enter in my new favorite hairdo: the french braided side bun. I will warn you that for this style, you will need to know how to do a basic french braid. Everything else is super easy, as this style can literally throw together in 5 minutes for a casual look, or take my time and make it more elegant for a wedding or more professional look.

As usual, if you have any questions, I am happy to answer them in the comment section, and please feel free to share this with your friends.

PS bonus for seeing Miss Marley in action!

Things I love: Mummy edition

I have been in major, over-the-top, OCD style spring cleaning mode lately. I have no real explanation for my sudden NEED to have every little thing in my house clean and organized (no, I am not pregnant, simmer down), but as I am tossing useless clutter, storing  and organizing every day things, I have been thinking a lot about the things I could not live without. I might make this a running segment, because let’s face it, I love a lot of things.

Things I love: Me

  1. Bath and Body Works 3 wick candles – I am absolutely in looooooove with these. The scent truly comes out nd stays around, as in you can actually smell it when it is burning. What a novel idea! I am currently in love with the Paris Daydream scent.
  2. Korres Lip Butter – My friend Tiff (and one of my BlogHer12 roomies!) at Lookie Boo introduced me to this lip butter with a hint of color. In her defense, she did warn me that its an obsession. She was right, I love it in Wild Rose
  3. Argan Oil. I have been using this for a few years and I thought it was a small, well kept secret that I was privy to, kind of like a secret society. Due to the explosion of Moroccan Oil hair products, and some great studies, it is now widely known that Argan oil is like liquid gold. I use it as a facial moisturizer, body moisturizer, split end mender. Everything. Sephora has some, but I have heard multiple people say it is available cheaper elsewhere. Just make sure it is pure Argan Oil, nothing else added. (If you are in Canada, PharmaPlus brand, Rexall has a generic one. Available in the skincare aisle.)
  4. Old Navy The Rockstar jeans. I love these so  much that I literally have them in every color. That’s like 7 or 8 pairs. The perfect skinny jean, with a bit of stretch, and an array of colors available. Bonus: Cheap!
  5.  To-Go Tumbler – Seems trivial, but in my effort to drink more water, this has been keeping me on track. Oddly, I find I drink more with a straw. I take this everywhere with me.
  6. Punky Business Hand and Face Wipes – I discovered these while in Florida and I love them! All natural and organic face and hand wipes, super gentle, smell great and convenient.
  7. BeneFit They’re Real Mascara – The name says it all. I have been blessed with naturally long eyelashes (#humblebrag), but this formula is long lasting, non clumpy and perfect for an every day look, or add a couple coats for a dramatic look.
  8. Sevenly – This is a relatively new organization that chooses a new charity every week and they design a variety of beautiful shirts for you to purchase in order to support that cause. For every shirt sold $7 is donated to the charity. Beautiful, amazing, inspiring.
  9. Bugaboo Bee – We purchased this stroller for travel and lightweight purposes. See more about my love for it here
  10. Birdy – I have recently discovered this beauty of a singer and piano player and I am floored by this 15 year old’s (seriously, 15!) talent. Her cover of ‘Skinny Love‘ makes me want to burst into tears and hug her.

10 Hair Essentials You Should Own

One of the most common questions I am asked; what do I need in order to have great hair? So, without further adeau, here is my list off products every person should have in order to have the healthy, manageable and cute hair.

  1. Shampoo & Conditioner: I know, this seems like a no brainer, but you would be surprised at how little people care about this basic need. Using a quality shampoo and conditioner ensures that the base for your hairstyle is there, and your hair is in good condition. If you have colored or damaged hair, you should be especially careful and selective when it comes to picking a cleansing system. A great shampoo and conditioner will keep your color looking it’s best and could prolong your time between visits to the salon. My favorites: Joico K-Pak, John Frieda (I use to Red right now, because of my hair color), Bumble and Bumble Creme De Coco, Pantene Pro V Nature Fusion, Dove Damage Therapy.
  2. Deep Treatment:In order to maintain optimal moisture, repair damage and keep hair healthy, I suggest doing a treatment at least once a month. After your regular shampoo, towel dry hair (GENTLY), apply a decent amount of treatment throughout hair and let it sit for as long as possible. I sometimes braid it loosely or clip it up and wear it in there all day. My favorites: Joico K-Pak Re-constructor, Joico K-Pak Moisture, It’s a 10 Miracle Mask, Moroccan Oil Intense Hydrating Mask, AG Deep, Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep recovery Mask, L’Oreal EverStrong Deep Replenishing Mask.
  3. Leave-In Treatment:I have always been a huge believer in leave-in products. They help detangle your hair, add extra moisture, protection and improve hair’s overall condition. Make sure to choose one that is suitable to your hair type (ie not too heavy if you have fine hair etc). My favorites:It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product, Biolage Smoothing Milk, Aussie Hair Insurance Leave-In, Aveeno Nourish and Condition Treatment Spray, Redken Anti-Snap.
  4. Dry Shampoo: This is truly one of the best hair product inventions ever! Freshen up your hair and mask oily roots in between washes, it’s amazing. My favorites: Suave Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo, Sexy Hair Big Sexy Hair Volumizing Dry Shampoo, Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder (available in colors to match your hair, bonus!)
  5. Hairspray:A great hairspray can make or break your hairstyle. Depending on the style you are going for, adjust your spray accordingly. It IS possible to have great curls without a gross, crunchy finish. My favorites: a.) Hard hold: Joico JoiMist Firm, Kenra Volume Spray 25, Sebastian Shaper Plus, Dove Damage Therapy Hair Spray, extra hold. b.) Medium-light hold: Moroccan Oil Luminous Hairspray, Dove Damage Therapy Aerosol Spray – flexible hold.
  6. Heat Protection: In a perfect world, curling irons, flat irons and blow-driers would not damage your hair. But they do, a lot. Protect your hair before using these tools! My favorites:Kenra Platinum Hot Spray 20, Tresemme Heat Tamer, CHI Iron Guard.
  7. Styling Product: Mouse, serum, volumizer, or balm, a styling aid will help you achieve and maintain the style you are after. My favorites:Curls – Moroccan Oil Intense Curl Cream (or foam, for fine hair), Joico JoiWhip, Catwalk Curls Rock. Volumizing – Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray, Sexy Hair Big Sexy Hair Blow Dry Volume Gel, Redken Body Full Volumizing Foam. Straightening – Fekkai Glossing Cream, Moroccan Oil Serum, TIGI S Factor Smoothing Lusterizer, Bed Head After Party. Texturizer –  D:fi D:struct, AG Infrastructure, Sebastian Microfiber, Redken Water Wax, Short Sexy Hair Slept In, Sebastian Potion Number 9.
  8. Brushes: The tools you are using to de-tangle, style and manage your hair are just as important when it comes to caring for your hair. A natural boar bristle brush is a absolute must for every hair type. Why? Boar bristles are much more gentle on your hair, and they redistribute oils throughout hair as you brush, boosting shine and thus protecting your hair. Aside from that, if you blow-dry your hair, a good quality round brush will pay off in the long run, a tail comb is great for making parts and braiding, and a wide tooth comb to de-tangle fragile wet hair. For the love of everything, please stop ripping at your wet hair with a brush, it is breaking your hair! Start at your ends and use small strokes to work your way up and through the tangles if you must. My favorites: The Marilyn Brush Flatter Me Too (one of my absolute favorite hair items EVER.),
  9. Hair Dryer: Regardless if you dry your hair on a regular basis or not, a good quality hair dryer will shorten your style time, protect your hair and hold a style. Regardless of hair type, I always suggest drying the front of your hair (bangs, layers, cowlicks etc), then ‘fluff’ drying hair until it is 80-90% dry, and then go ahead with a round or paddle brush. For the most part, you are wasting your time before that. Also make sure that your hair is completely dry and no dampness is left at all, otherwise you will end up with frizz and a limp style. My favorites: I have had my Avanti Ultra Professional GP-3000 for over 8 years and it is still amazing.
  10. Styling Tools: Curling iron, flat iron, hot rollers, Velcro rollers, diffuser, hot air styler. All of these items are made to aid you in achieving the style you are after, and after some practice, you will discover how versatile they can be. I actually curl my hair with my flatiron all the time! When it comes to a item that you use on a religious basis, it is always worth investing in a professional quality product. My favorites: CHI Flat Iron, Rusk Curling Iron, Infinitipro Spin Air Rotating Styler.

For the record, most of these products are available at your local salon, or These are my personal opinions and have been formed over my 10 years of experience as a hair stylist. Yes, my bathroom is completely overrun with hair products and I have tried a million different brands, it honestly never gets old and I adore it. Any questions? Suggestions? Thoughts? Leave a comment and I will do my best to help.

In which I am a genius

I have enough jewlery to choke a horse. You know, if you ever needed to do such a thing… Ok. Bad visual, but what I am trying to explain is that I have a ton of really fun, cute, and meaningful jewlery. All of which have been sitting in a tangled massive lump on my dresser since we moved. Every once in a while I get ambitious and spend a few minutes trying to save a necklace and complete my outfit, but alas, I have been lazy and at a loss on how to effictively organize and display my accessories.

Once upon a time I was the woman who was always complimented on my fun accessories, and I relied on them to turn a relatively simple outfit into something a little more interesting and pulled together. I want that woman back, darn it. So on a recent trip to IKEA with a friend, I spotted the most amazing solution to my problem: THIS and THESE were promptly hung in my bathroom. BOOM. My fashion life (and organizational OCD) are forever changed.

Tangled, indeed.

If your daughter is anything like mine, chances are you too have approximately 736 new dolls (and their ity bity accessories) underfoot ever since Christmas. It’s seriously baby/princess-paloza up in here and Marley can’t get enough. She has 2 (or 3 depending on her mood), that she sleeps with, 1 that she takes for walks in the stroller, 2 for the car and a handful to feed, dance with, talk to, read to and spend her time with. You think I am kidding?

Exhibit A:

She’s reading to them. Yes, I know. You may die now.

Anywho, if you are experiencing (or an old pro) with the doll take over, you are also familliar with that moment where you realize how horrible and ratty the dolls look. Particularly the brand new Disney princess who just so happens to have SO MUCH HAIR. This one also happens to be Marley’s ohmygodabsoluetfavorite, so it is dragged everywhere. I have tried to brush it, but it becomes such an insane rats nest of synthetic fiber mess that I was at a loss. Marley was upset that Princess was looking like a hot mess, and NOT princess-y enough.

I had a stroke of genius, and I am going to share with you the secret of taming the doll hair. Ready for this? FABRIC SOFTENER! You see, just as I was cursing those doll makers for using crappy, synthetic hair (becuause I seriously own the holy grail of hair products), it hit me. Fabric softner would work beautifully on this.

So I gathered all of her dolls, a tiny spray bottle filled with fabric softener, a brush and a few clear elastics. A couple sprays of fabric softener onto the dolls hair, just enough to comb through, and it’s like SILK. You don’t have to soak the head or anything, just mist lightly. BOOM. Silky, tangle free, yummy smelling Princess hair. I took it one step further and gave Rapunzel the fancy braid she has in the movie (divide all of her hair into three sections. Braid each section, so you have 3 separate braids. Braid those three braids together.), and was deemed MOM OF THE YEAR.

I went on a bit of a binge and fixed up every doll, after Marley demanded pretty braids for them all. Easy peasy. Now go save some dolls!

This one time, at home… I needed a change.

I’ve been saying for a few months now that I wanted to change up my hair. I have been growing it out for almost 4 years after deciding to try the ‘Posh’ cut (not nearly as cute when you are not 80lbs soaking wet), and it had been quite dark for some time. I have always had a love affair with red hair, for as long as I can remember. I would have red highlights put in it, then go back to dark, then all red, then red chunks, then back to dark, then to blonde etc etc.

Are you seeing a pattern here? I like to have fun with my hair, and as a licensed hairstylist, I have been fortunate to have everything at my fingertips to make that happen. So when I made the decision to break my boring brown hair streak, it was as easy as running to the local professional supply store and getting the color I needed. Added bonus: it only cost me $8.00 for that professional color na na na na na na!

Yup, I'm putting this on the internet...

I'm a superhero!

Final result was freaking AWESOME. I was shocked, and totally unsure. It was so different and more vibrant than I was prepared for, but I knew that I loved it right away. Red just feels right on me. I feel fun, sassy, warmer and dare I say sexier? It’s such a fun color and so ME. I walked around with it like this today, got a lot of looks and 2 women stopped me to ask where I had it done because they loved it. Ego boost? Yes please.

However, after some thought and examination, I knew that this color was going to fade crazy fast, (remember that thing about liking to change my hair? Ya, damaged hair means color washes out super easily) so I decided to throw on a semi permanent gloss over it to deepen the color a bit and add some richness. and now? I REALLY love it. So there you go, new Krystal.

And then I toned it down

(it’s actually quite a bit more red than it looks in this picture, I’ll have to get a better shot tomorrow.)

Beach Wave Hair: Vlog tutorial

I was chatting on Twitter a few days ago when I had the idea to share some of my knowledge with you guys. I have been a hairstylist for almost 10 years and thought it would be fun to vlog a few tips and tutorials on how to style your hair. I know how hard it is when you become a Mom, suddenly your hair takes a back seat and spends 99.9% of the time in a ponytail/bun/braid and full of baby goober and food.
So here I am, trying to find fun, EASY way to keep my hair looking nice and sharing them with you. The first thing I am going to show you is the Victoria’s Secret tousled beach-y wave. It’s SO easy after some practice and perfect for a Mom because its supposed to look messy and undone ha-ha.
Before you start the video Im going to say this: please, please please ignore my ranting. I have a bad habit of talking too much when I am nervous. Nothing more random than sitting on your toilet sideways and talking to your laptop right?
So without further adieu: Beach wave hair!

New Addition!

No, no, no, no, no, NO. Not in that way.
I spent a good chunk of M’s nap time today working on some new creations for her! New spring outfits need new accessories to pull an outfit together right? I think I came up with some cute things, and I even made M a special Valentines Day headband. Crafty, I know.
